hello folks, I can't get the 1400x1050 mode to run, although I have it in the modeline.. i'm using debian (testing) and xorg 7.0, ati radeon mobility 7500 on ibm thinkpad r40.
i get a WWarning message that this mode isn't supported. perhaps by the driver installed it's not (ati pkg in debian (includes radeon support))? because I've read this mode is indeed supported.
The stock ati driver included with distros is a very basic driver. To get the full benefit of the card, you will need to recompile your kernel and/or reinstall X from source. I have the same model Thinkpad and the comments on the Ati site state that they won't release a proprietary Linux driver for our graphics card because X.org includes it all in the release.
Distribution: K/Ubuntu 18.04-14.04, Scientific Linux 6.3-6.4, Android-x86, Pretty much all distros at one point...

The Mobility 7500 is not supported by the proprietary ATI drivers... you must use the open source drivers. Many distros easily set up the resolution for the 1400x1050... as on my Dell C640...
I've had success with Debian, Kubuntu/Ubuntu, SuSE, Mandriva, Fedora, etc.
Make sure you are using a distro that supports the newer Xorg open source ATI drivers...
