[Solved] The AC Adapter which works correctly with a Dell Latitude E4310

The AC Adapter which works correctly with a Dell Latitude E4310

Shortly after buying a used Dell Latitude E4310 in the Spring of 2017, I soon after bought two Dell 130 Watt AC Adapters which have identical electrical specs.

I thoroughly tested them both in a variety of ways, including running Dell's Pre-boot Diagnostic Test in full while the 'E4310 was powered by each AC Adapter in turn. No issues arose.

So, I put the AC Adapter with the longer AC cable into my notebook backpack and then deployed the other one next to my desktop rig for convenience.

Fast forward to Nov. 2021 when, during a four day stay at a local hospital, I made extended use of my Dell in conjunction with the AC Adapter with the longer AC cable for the first time — and my Latitude E4310 began suffering from random hardware freezes.

Yet, after I returned home, the Dell ran fine once more.

Fast forward again to May, 2022 when it was time for a one way stay at a different local hospital's palliative care unit which saw me bring all of my notebook-related hardware with me, including both AC Adapters.

Once more, I used the AC Adapter with the longer AC cable, and once again the Dell Latitude E4310 began experiencing random hardware freezes. I was puzzled and exasperated, that is until I found business_kid's post:

My computer randomly freezes.

Then it clicked; maybe it's the AC Adapter!

So, I plugged in the other AC Adapter and my old 'E4310 hasn't frozen in a week.

It wasn't until this morning that a visiting friend brought me a magnifying glass so that my old eyes could finally read the tiny type on both AC Adapters.

Here's what's stenciled on both units:

It is also worth mentioning that in my protracted search for a solution to the freezing issue, I found other posts from the owners of various Dell Latitude models in which the same symptoms are involved.

At issue is the accurate identification of truly compatible AC Adapters for older Dell Latitude laptops at a time when Dell no longer offers this info on its web sites, and many of the Dell AC Adapters one can find look largely the same and sport identical electrical specs, with the only apparent difference being the supplier.
