What is "memory BAT mapping"?

What is this memory BAT mapping?

For the PowerPC architecture, BAT registers offer an alternative to the usual memory-mapping architecture (page-tables and so forth). Said to be faster, but debatable.

Is there some web-resource on BAT mapping, I googled about it and got only mailing lists' entries...
