what is hda


What is the use of hda and what hda1,hda2..... means

/dev/hda is the first (master?) hard drive on the primary IDE controller. /dev/hda1, /dev/hda2, etc. refer to the partitions created on the drive. There's an overview of this at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki//dev/hda and at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disk_partitioning

If we have 80GB hard disc and we have four partitions of 20GB , then where the hda , hda1....hda9 refers and what bytes they take

hda refers to IDE or Parallel ATA (PATA) hard drives.
hda - 1st controller master
hdb - 1st controller slave
hdc - 2nd controller master
hdd - 2nd controller slave
and so on...

You can see how the drive is partition by using the command fdisk.

fdisk -l (that is a small L and you must be root to run command)
