Unable to boot any 2.6.17 and up kernels

Hi all, in an effort to get my ATI card working, I'm trying to update to one of the newer kernels. I am running FC5, 2.6.16-1.2133_FC5smp, and aside from the ATI module not working (thats a whole other story), it works great.

I have installed from RPM, through yum, each of the newest kernels as they came out, since my current kernel has been released. Any 2.6.17 or newer kernel will boot up to a certain point, and simply hang. It generally gets to Starting XFS, and dies there, but if it took longer than normal to boot, like having to get an IP address or taking the time to complain that its doenst like my wireless card, it will get to the process before XFS and stop there.

Any ideas?

It does the same thing with the testing 2.6.18 kernel RPM, from the fedora updates page...

Thanks,

Scott McNeely

Do you have Xfs support enabled in the kernel? If not, its going to stop everytime it tries to access your drive because it doesnt know xfs. You may want to try building a custom kernel or using yum to get a kernel with xfs. Can you post an output of dmesg?

The xfs it seems to hang on is the X font server, I only have EXT3 and Fat drives on the computer...

Is that needed, or is there a way to stop it from loading?

If you dont have any xfs formatted drives, you dont need xfs. If you want to keep it from loading, and you feel like doing it, one surefire way is to recompile the kernel without xfs support. I'm sure there are other ways to keep that module from loading, but im not sure what it is, unless you put something like
Code:
modprobe -r xfs
in your rc.local file or whatever file you use for local system initialization. Reading your dmesg post again, have you tried to update your xserver? Or even try to use the fbdev driver for X? It looks to me(and i could be wrong) that your problems are coming from your ATI driver.

Ok, well I've compiled the latest and greatest (2.6.18.1) from full source, no patches or anything. It hangs at starting automount. when it hangs, it just sits there, the only indication of hanging is that it stops doing stuff, no error messages or anything. If I move the mouse, the little graphic that shows that its doing something will move, but thats all that it will do, save from being able to switch rhgb between detail and non-detail view...

This is starting to get a little annoying, was there a hardware incompatibly added in the 2.6.17+ kernels?

Fedora released the 2.6.18 rpms, the non SMP one works, but the SMP one does not. To have hyperthreading enabled, you need SMP to be on, right? The old SMP's worked, and showed me as having two 3.2GHZ P4's which is what it should see with HT enabled, why does the new one not work?
