System can't bright up with new kernel version upgrading in LVM setting

All,

Firstly, I installed Fedora Core 4(2.6.11) on the machine with LVM configuration. Following are my filesystem configuration:

device name ------------------------------ mount point
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00/Logical00 -------- /
/dev/sdb2 ------------------------------ /boot
/dev/sdb3 ------------------------------ swap

After the installation over, system can run normally. For using the iscsi initiator function, I download the newer kernel 2.6.17 source tarball from kernel.org website and unpack it. Then begin to compile the new kernel. Here are my steps:
1. make oldconfig and configure the new feature( I also tested another scenario copying the file ".config" directly from 2.6.11 to 2.6.17 kernel source folder without configure the new feature)
2. make bzImage
3. make modules
4. make modules_install
5. make install

After the new kernel compiled over, choosing the newer kernel as system startup, unfortunately, the kernel bright up failed. The error message are below:
Uncompressing Linux... Ok. booting the kernel.
Red Hat nash version 4.2.15 starting
Reading all physical volumes. This may take a while...
No volume groups found
Unable to find volume group "VolGroup00"
.....

Also, I compared the two initrd image between the 2.6.11 and 2.6.17 two kernels. There is no difference between them

Does any give me some suggestion how to resolve this problem? Why my kernel can't find the Volume group?

Thanks

Unhappy

Is anybody able to give some suggestion to resolve this problem, or this problem is too simple to be worth answering?
