Starting udev fails ,kernel doesnt boot properly........

hi all,
while booting, udev doesnt start and fails
Code:

Starting udev:        [FAILED]
as a result of which while the process of checking file system
fails
Code:

Checking the root filesystem
My system uses logical volume manager
it shows the error,
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00: No such file or directory.

I suppose jst bcoz udev fails, the system cannot find the /dev directory
which leads to failur of checking fiel system and
"press Control-D to reboot",is seen on the prompt

how to start udev succesfully
any input is appreciated.
