LOL!

It's okay, it happens to the best of us. This morning I tore my room apart looking for my keys to later find them in my pocket. Go figure.

Enjoy your sound!

Hello everyone,

I would like to ask your help in the following situation, think this post is relevant.

I installed Sarge on my laptop, which has an atiixp sound chipset on board.
After installation all sound was muted, including pc speaker and of
course the soundcard.

Running alsaconf, I could see my card, although I got an error -13, no
soundcard detected at the end of the process.

Here let me note, that I get a silly atiixp modem as well in lspci,
where this is not true, I dont have such a modem, ALSA disabled it and
put a lower priority on the alsa-base file, in etc/modutils. But still
no sound. I think this has to do with some support they tried to
insert to the alsas modules or something like that.

ANyways, running alsamixer, or any mixer did not help, and I am member
of the audio group of course.

Looking through forums did not help much, I got more confused I think.

Therefore, I visited the ALSA webpage where my chipset is supported
and tried to follow the instructions from there.

Downloaded alsa-driver, alsa-lib and utils and tried to make configure
but it always exits with compile error. ( I think it has to do with
looking in /usr/src/alsa/alsa-driver/acore for files which are not
there, although extraction of files went smoothly).

Now to the weird part:

After doing the above, of course sound was not working still, I run
alsaconf and it does not detect the soundcard at all. Furthermore, the
pc speaker is umuted !!!

I also playd with the alsa service, enabling it or disabling it on
startup but still no difference.

Can anyone please point me in the correct direction?

I am confused and I dont kno where to look anymore.

Sorry for the long post, any help appreciated greatly.

Cheers everyone

do you have all of the required modules loaded, please post the output of 'lsmod'. When you ran 'alsamixer' did you just turn up the output volume, or did you unmute the channel as well? (It should show 00 instead of MM under the desired channel).

regards,

Hi,
Thanks for the answer.
Can't post the output lsmod not on my linux terminal now, sorry.

AS I said before installing the Alsa drivers, I had the correct modules, ac97, snd-atiixp etc.
Double-checked this with other distributions running on my machine that produce sound.

After installing Alsa, the only relevant module is atiixp, shich does not work.

I cannot run alsamixer, neither before or after installing Alsa, I get the same error, no soundcard detected...

This doesn't necessarily mean that all of the correct modules to load alsa are running. Please post the output of 'lsmod' to get further assistance.

have you tried running
Code:
# alsaconf
first, to set up your card?

EDIT: Sorry, I just checked through the posts, and I saw that you had already run "alsaconf".

Are you running alsaconf that was implemented with your kernel, or are you running alsaconf that you compiled from source? I'm certain that you would run into problems if you tried to run alsaconf with both "types" of ALSA installed simultaneously.
