single user mode

Which OS are we talking about and what are you trying to acheive?

Single user mode does not normally need a password, or it uses the root password. AFAIK: It is usually listed in the grub menu as "recovery" mode and in a gdm login screen as "failsafe terminal". initV systems let you telinit to single-user mode. (man telinit)
