Should i use ext4 or reiserFS?

Hi,
I am using Zorin OS lite (Based on Ubuntu Linux 11.4 with GNOME 2.32.1) for two months.I had created a partition of ext3 5.3GB with 7tools Partition Manager for linux. On installation,i gave the installer the choice to reformat the partition.I have install some other applications like GIMP and some audio video players. But its free space is consumed more than i expected. There is Much Bigger difference between the actual “size of the files” and “size on the disk”.How much?
For example, the /usr/share/fonts/truetype/ttf-nafees 's actual “size of files”is 32.9 MB (32,876,720 bytes) but “size on disk”tells it is 263.7 MB (263,716,864 bytes) .
That is a gigantic difference and i have checked other folder as well. All have the same problem. So i am wondering if i am alone or you gays facing the the same problem.I wanted to change my file system to ext4 or reiserFs.I have read in a magazine that reiserFS is very similar to NTFS.But on the other hand i have read a lot of good things on wikipedia about ext4.So i am confused what to do .Should i reformat my drive or change it to ext4 or reiserFS.Please help me to decide. Thanks

Use ext4

Ext-4 filesystem is good one to use. Before upgrading filesystem, make sure that you have backed up data from existing partitions. After upgrading ext-3 to ext-4, restore data from backup.

Hi Danish,

Confirm that you have installed "e2fsprogs" package on your system and "/sbin/mkfs.ext4" utility is installed on your server.

You can find more detailed instructions on following link:

dear mukt kalandar ,i tried to install e2fsprogs by command line apt-get install. It said that i have already the newest version of it but when i type e2fsprogs ,it gave me error.I am posting what i get on terminal.See your self
root@danish:/home/danish# apt-get install e2fsprogs
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
e2fsprogs is already the newest version.

hi syg00, the folder “ttf-nafees” contains 10 urdu fonts. Its size is 32.9 mb but “size on disk”tells that it is 263.7 mb.I have coppied the same folder on my NTFS partition and when i check its properties on the same linux its file size and file size on disk is same 32.9 mb.I have checked other folders and others have the same problem plus i did not put that much data on this ext3 partition but free space is much much low than i expected. So that gave me the conclusion that there is something wrong with file system.I did not know that i can post pictures in my posts other wise i would put screen shots of tabs. Can i post screen shots? tell me? thanks for asking.

Danish Ali 09-17-2011 09:06 AM

hellow syg00, hopfully i gave you a satisfactory answer.if you need more clarification,i have screen shots of the same folder "ttf-nafees”on both ext3 partition and on NTFS. I have visited your profile and i did not see an email or facebook address. If you give me any kind of digital address,i will send you those screen shots.thanks.

Hi, i am wondering where synaptic package manager puts it downloaded package files in uninstalled condition so that i can copy my downloaded programs from that location so when i reinstall the Linux,i would not have to download programs again. thanks
PS If i could not gave you an answer shortly after your post during the day time of PST that would be because of power load sheddings that are common in pakistan.

Since the guy who wrote ReiserFS ran afoul of the Russian Mafia and, fortunately perhaps for him, merely wound up in prison instead of at the bottom of a river somewhere, I think I'd use a different filesystem now.

Has Russian Mafia involvement ever been proven in this case?

Frankly, I don't know. But if the guy who wrote the thing's in prison, whether he is "happy so to be" or not, then I'm rather of the opinion that this is now an argument against using his file-system ...

Aside from that, how is anything ever "proven against" a Mafia? Those who were to try such a thing, might find themselves in the Neva wearing concrete overshoes.
