Processor Affinity

I am new to linux...
When I was going through an operating system book...
I found the work processor affinity..related to cache and processor..
what exactly does processor affinity mean..
and difference between different types..(soft/hard affinity)

for switching multi processor or multi core systems
for example you have a 2 core system
and have a process with affinity set to 1
the process exeicutes on core 2
so in general
affinity 0 is core 1
affinity 1 is core 2
affinity 0 & 1 is core 1 & 2
got that?
