Hi I am new to linux and I have been trying to install an mp3 player to my suse 10.0 distro. On trying to install xmms-1.2.10 the console informs me that:
*** The gtk-config script installed by GTK could not be found
*** If GTK was installed in PREFIX, make sure PREFIX/bin is in
*** your path, or set the GTK_CONFIG environment variable to the
*** full path to gtk-config.
configure: error: *** GTK+ >= 1.2.2 not installed - please install first ***
None of which I really understand so I downloaded gtk+-2.10.6 and tried to install that but when I type "./configure" I get:
checking for BASE_DEPENDENCIES... configure: error: Package requirements (glib-2.0 >= 2.12.0 atk >= 1.9.0 pango >= 1.12.0 cairo >= 1.2.0) were not met: Requested 'glib-2.0 >= 2.12.0' but version of GLib is 2.8.1
Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you
installed software in a non-standard prefix.
Alternatively, you may set the environment variables BASE_DEPENDENCIES_CFLAGS
and BASE_DEPENDENCIES_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.
See the pkg-config man page for more details.
The bold line above confused me as I believe that 2.8.1 is between 2.0 and 2.12.0 however I thought I would then download a newer version of glib, 2.12.0 was the latest I could find.
This configured fine and then I typed make and all seems to go well but when I type "make install" I get this:
Do you have permission to install glib-gettextize in /usr/local/bin? With a typical GNU/Linux setup, you'll need to be root to install the package. You can configure and compile as an unprivileged user.
BTW there is glib and there is glib-2.0, sorta like second generation glib. GTK+ was looking for version 2.12.0 or later of glib-2.0, not glib in the range 2.0 - 2.12.0. So 2.8.1 doesn't satisfy the dependency.
I have found the glibgettextsize file but I am unsure or unable to install it, I should have have full permissions as I am the only user I would have thought.
Thanks
