Question problem with nedit

I have just installed ubuntu onto my laptop and I am trying to use nedit. My keyboard will not let me use quotation marks or apostrophes. When I try to use quotation marks, a wierd A symbol appears with an accent over it. Sometimes nothing will happen, and my computer will just beep. Is this something to do with how I configured the keyboard settings, and if so, how can I change them?
