nVidia XFree86 Debian 7900 GT problem

I know this isnt really the best topic possible to talk about it,
but I didnt find one more suitable.

I just installed the nvidia driver (version 1.0.7174) on my debian system using the howto found here - http://home.comcast.net/~andrex/Debi...tallation.html

problem is, when i reboot and the X server supposedly loads it just shows a black screen, and doesnt respond to anything execpt caps lock or num lock and such.

i also installed an application that shows you an ASCII image of the debian logo with some hardware information in it, it loads and then a black screen, can it be that program's fault?

like i mentioned above, i use Xfree86 on a debian system with kernel 2.4.2X (dont remember exact version), and have a GEFORCE 7900 GT graphics card.

any suggestions?

thanks, Heeap.

I should have mentioned i used an i686 kernel.
I also had the i386 one, so i just booted, same happend, but instead of a black screen i got a crash. details are -
Faild to load kernel module nvidia
No screens found, screens found but with no usable information.

these messages appear in some different contexts.

any ideas?

From the link you provided:

Quote:
Before you install the Debian nVidia packages, you should choose a distribution, either 'testing' or 'unstable', from which to install them. There is no 'stable' version of these packages at present. You can run 'apt-cache policy nvidia-kernel-source' to see which versions of the driver are available in each distribution.

Is there anything wrong about looking for ways to make it work?
I wont give up in this just because there is no stable version.

Good luck then. The obvious solution is to install Etch instead. It'll be "stable" within the next few weeks.
