No internet connection after upgrading to kernel 2.6.18

I upgraded to the above mentioned kernel, but now I have no internet connection anymore. I have a cable connection and it worked perfectly before installing the new kernel. Is there anything that I should have done before, while or after inistalling the kernel? I am finding it difficult to get help on this subject. I need to sort out my wireless card etc. but only after I upgraded my kernel. If anyone has any idea of what I can do or where I can find help, please let me know.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

How is your cable modem connected: Ethernet, serial, USB, wireless? It looks you're missing the right driver.

It is a cable from the wireless modem to the computer so I guess its ethernet? Didn't have to do anything when using the previous kernel.Any by the way. I had a typo. I'm upgrading to 2.6.16

I would suggest that you copy your old config file, and use "make oldconfig" first, and then "make xconfig" second, being careful to only change what you understand right off. You can always do it again. Here is the guide I have used 3-4 times on different distros. Very good guide. http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Kernel_Compilation_Dapper and here is another I have used: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=305921 and yes, the first one will work with Debian, . . Some of the package names might be a little different or outdated . . . use common sense and you'll do fine :)

I'm assuming that you're using Sarge, since that's what your profile says. Did you get your new kernel from backports.org, or where?

Lots of people have trouble understanding that Stable is not meant to be updated from anywhere except its own repos or backports.org. Your ethernet connection should certainly work with a new kernel, but a wireless connection would not. For that, you'll need to install the driver module for your new kernel.

I did everything over and unplugged my wireless card before updating my kernel. That way it removes hotplug properly and everything works fine. Kinda weird.
