make xconfig fails

I'm trying to run the kernel's make xconfig and I'm getting the error "/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lXi". Googling this message turns up the hint that the linker is looking for a static library, libXi.a. In /usr/lib I have shared libraries and but no libXi.a.

I'm running Fedora 8 and trying to configure a 2.6.20 kernel. Now here's the kicker. I have another virtually identical Fedora 8 system that happens to be running under VMware. make xconfig works on that one and it doesn't have a libXi.a either.

Any ideas?

The .a file is in different package than .so. My guess is xorg-x11-devel, but search for file name in the package manager to be sure. The other machine has the package installed already, it seems.
