What distro (version) of Linux are you using?

Is gcc installed? (Normally, make would be installed as part of gcc.) Regardless, check with your package manager.

Run the command

make --version

see what it outputs, if it does give you some thing like

GNU Make 3.81
Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
This is free software; see the source for copying conditions.

This program built for i486-pc-linux-gnu

Make is installed, else it is not.

Not all versions of opensuse have make (and automake) installed by default (10.3 does, if I remember correctly).
You probably also need to install gcc, g++ and binutils

Use Yast to install them (YaST -> Software -> Software Management).

Hope this helps.
