Keyboard Layout Switcher applet died unexpectedly

One day it happened to me that when I started my Toshiba Satellite 1900
notebook running under RedHat9, a message

The Keyboard Layout Switcher applet appears to have died unexpectedly.

Reload this applet?

Since then, I cannot get rid of this. I have to set the keyboard
to US English and click YES but the next time, it is there again.

Any advice how to stop this message appearing while retaining
the applet on the panel?

Many thanks in advance!

Hi Petr,

I was getting the same problem (and sometimes it didn't quit but would just stop working giving me US layout when I actually use British English and Ukrainian).

I didn't manage to get it fixed but found a work-around. I use both KDE and GNOME (KDE at work and home, GNOME - on the move) so I got rid of lay-out switcher applet and just use kxkb in both GNOME and KDE. Another advantage to this approach is that I can use my customized keyboard shortcut (meta+space) - GNOME switcher only allowed pre-defined choice of shortcuts.

Disadvantage here is of course that you'll have to also install KDE dependencies to use this approach.

I hope this might help.
