Kernel upgrade stops at Busy Box v.1.01 on reboot

I'm running Debian Sid/Etch I did a a weekly update and upgrade and a new Kernel was installed:

2.6.16.-i-686

after the requested reboot the process stopped at:

Busy Box v.1.01
/bin/sh: can't access tty
Job control turned off
/#

typing 'help' at the prompt gets me about 150 odd commands 'built in' but none seem to be relevant to what the prompt requires to continue booting the machine.

I've now rebooted with the 2.6.12-i-686 kernel and everything is working again.

I've not seen this happen on a Kernal Upgrade before does anyone know what's going on, and how to turn the 'job control' back on, or whatever it needs.

Thanks,

C.
