kernel installation error(utsrelease.h)


Hi
i am working on opensuse.
i am trying to install a kernel.i got the following error can any one say how can i rectify it.

make && make modules_install && make install
scripts/kconfig/conf -s arch/x86/Kconfig
CHK include/linux/version.h
UPD include/linux/version.h
/bin/sh: -c: line 0: unexpected EOF while looking for matching `"'
/bin/sh: -c: line 1: syntax error: unexpected end of file
make: *** [include/linux/utsrelease.h] Error 2

This looks like you messed up that file somehow. Try to install the kernel sources anew.

Did u install the kernel image first ?
List the steps u did for installing the kernel. Only then, it will be comfortable to provide solution.

steps i used for compiling the kernel

-->make mrproper
-->cp /boot/config....pae .config
-->make oldconfig
-->make menuconfig
-->make && make modules_install && make install

Hi..
U need not copy the config file manually.( see II line of your steps )
Try these steps. It would surely work.

make menuconfig
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
make install

No manual jobs. Only these commands would work.

well even the second command make bzImage is showing the same error
make bzImage

can any one say what should i do for compiling the kernel.
