Check the file to see if it's been corrupted. You might even consider downloading the whole kernel package again and checking the sum before unpacking it.
i downloaded the file again (linux-2.6.20.7.tar.gz) and yet still the same error.
Are you starting with a system that it capable of compiling a 2.6.20 kernel? IOW, is gcc and everything else up-to-date? What distro and version are you using for this?
