but what about questions like these ?
Timer frequency
1. 100 HZ (HZ_100)
2. 250 HZ (HZ_250)
3. 300 HZ (HZ_300) (NEW)
> 4. 1000 HZ (HZ_1000)
choice[1-4?]:

#3 is a new choice. Your existing system uses #4. See the arrow? Just press enter.

> means which is used by system, i never knew this, do you know any website from where i can read about compiling the new kernel for noobs, i have messed up this thread badly you know its better if i give some reading and then try it.

Don't sweat it. All you have to do is get a fresh copy of the running config and then rerun it. This is the way I like to do it:
Code:
cp /boot/config-`uname -r` .config      (NOTE those are backquotes, NOT single quotes)
make oldconfig

what does m refers to ?

i am still unable to compile it properly.thanks everyone for helping, i will first read some docs and then try again.

what does m refers to ?
m=module, y=yes, n=no. The one in capital letter is the default choice if you press enter.
