kernel 2.6.33.1 does not compile properly

first off, i'm a linux newbie. this is my first attempt to update a linux kernel.
current system: mandrake 9.0, kernel: 2.4.19

when compiling the kernel (make stage) after it gets past "LD sound/usb/usx2y/built-in.o" the error "make[1]: *** No rule to make target `|', needed by `firmware/sb16/mulaw_main.csp.gen.S'. Stop.
make: *** [firmware] Error 2" appears.
as i am a linux newbie, I would appreciate if someone could tell me what this means and what I have done wrong.
Thank you in advance.

Well, to be quite honest with you ... you probably don't want to be doing this anyway. :tisk:

Now... that might sound "patronizing" and "condescending" but ... not so fast! If you are using a distro, then you most probably do not want to be doing anything at all except installing the packages that "momma gives you." Only in this way can you hope to keep your system in-sync with what the distro publisher expects. If you stray from that path, then the quite-brutal reality is that you just might wind up with a computer that is "irretrievably hosed."
