Kernel 2.6.26.3: VFS cannot open root device, can't find root device

I've been running off a customized 2.6.25.6 kernel with Slackware 12.1 where my notebook's HD is seen has /dev/sda. Now that I've decided to give 2.6.26.3 a shot I haven't been able to get past the early stages to boot up this new kernel. The .config didn't remained the same between the two kernels with the addition of the new stuff present in the newer kernel. After starting the new kernel I get a kernel panic where it states the following:

VFS cannot open root device 806 or unknown-block(8,6)

Please appen a correct "root=" boot option; here are the available partitions
list of all my partitions on /dev/HDA

So something happened where my partitions on the notebook's HD are now seen as /dev/hda rather than /dev/sda. What did I miss?

Nevermind... looks like the ATA PIIX drivers in the kernel were taking over rather than the SATA version...
