Kernel 2.6.22.1 Upgrade

Hi,

I am running SuSE 9.1 on a Pentium-IV desktop

I realise it is an old distro , but in order to get the great new features , I downloaded the latest kernel sources i.e. 2.6.22.1

After building it according to the following steps , my kernel only boots in text mode. I have GRUB as my bootloader

Another strage thing I noticed was that the /lib/modules directory only contains the /drivers/ folder and only the wait_scan.o module

when I run make modules_install , I just see wait_scan.o getting copied to /lib/modules , but no other!

Steps I followed : (after unpacking the source and all)

1) make mrproper
2) make menuconfig (Here I saved the .config file with all default options)
3) make
4) make modules_install
5) Copied the bzImage to the /boot folder
6) Added appropriate entry to the /boot/grub/menu.lst to have my new kernel show up as a boot option. Here , however I am still using the same initrd as the old kernel. ( If I do need to build a new initrd , how do I do that ? Steps please )
7) REBOOT into the new kernel (but alas , only get to text mode....no KDE )

An early reply will be greatly appreciated!

Try again, this time add the step 1.5: make oldconfig
Also you need to spend time in the 'make menuconfig' step and make sure support for your hardware is configured.

Your hardware you ask????, type the following command to find out: /sbin/lspci -v

To spread light on your one module, its a forced SCSI module in the 2.6.22 kernel, if you have SCSI support and module support it will be built, discussion is going on to make it optional or be inbuilt.
