alright, I am tinkering on an older Latitude laptop running Slackware 10.2 with the default kernel (2.4.31). I downloaded the source for 2.4.36.6 and configured via make menuconfig to my liking. Next is make dep and I get this error:
Code:
bash-3.00$ make dep
gcc -Wall -Wstrict-prototypes -O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -o scripts/mkdep scripts/mkdep.c

My first obvious thought was dependencies. I checked Documentation/Changes and checked what the required software is, checked all the versions and they are all newer than the minimum requirements needed to compile the kernel.
My next thought was permissions, so I originally tried 'chmod -R 755' and that didnt do it, so I tried 'chmod -R 777' and that didnt help at all. So permissions is obviously not the problem.
So, if anybody has any ideas please feel free to slap me in the face for not seeing it.
Also, I tried running 'make dep' on the kernel source that came preinstalled on the install (2.4.31) and it gave the exact same error. So I doubt it is from a corrupt kernel source download. That leaves gcc/make right?
Thanks,
