IT821X driver not working properly in 2.6.21.1

I use a Gigabyte GA-7N400 Pro2 motherboard, with the IT8212 Raid chip onboard. I'm using Slackware-11.0 & have customized a kernel for it. I recently upgraded from 2.6.20.3 to 2.6.21.1 & am now having trouble with the IT8212 Raid chip driver. When using this driver, it is necessary to set DMA on for its drives quite early in the start=up process. I do this at the beginning of rc.S, right after the PATH statement. When I try to use the new kernel, I get the following error whenever I attempt to run hdparm:
Code:
# hdparm -d1 /dev/hde
/dev/hde: setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA  failed: Input/Output error
using_dma  =0 (off)
hde does get initialized, & I can use it for a short time, but it will quickly tell me that it has lost its journal, then it is either no longer accessible, or it locks up the computer. Everything works normally when I boot 2.6.20.3.
Here is the relevant portion of the 2.6.21.1 config file:
Code:
# ATA/ATAPI/MFM/RLL support
#
CONFIG_IDE=y
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE=y
#

I have crawled through the config files for both kernels & the only difference I can see is that the option "Use DMA by default" is not available in 2.6.21.1. I don't know if this has something to do with the problem, if there is just a bug in the driver, or if something else is wrong, but I need some advice here.
Regards,
Bill
