How to set the root password during kernel building?

Hi all,
i m trying to build linux kernel 2.6.19 for my versatile Board.
when i try booting my linux image for first time
it tells me that the password for the root user is : root
please change it using passwd.

As for me i think there must be some option which i choose check its box to change the default passwod of the superuser

can anyone tell me how can i change that default password during the kernel configuration.

thanks in advance

root passwords have nothing to do with kernel building, there is no way to set it there at all. it's defined in the /etc/shadow file assuming you're using password encryption which if this is an embedded system mightn't be the case always.

i think it must be stored in @ least in c file or h file in the kernel source but uptill now i cant find it.

so what do u think about this?

Also i have another question : can i create a new user during kernel building from source or no?

Like acid_kewpie said, passwords have absolutely nothing to do with configuring your kernel. In fact, the kernel doesn't really care about passwords and is not involved with them; it just boots and executes 'init'.

If you're building an embedded system using scripts provided by the manufacturer, you really should ask the manufacturer how to change those things. If you want to change them yourself, you can look at the system you've built and edit the /etc/passwd and /etc/group files, and if the system uses shadow passwords, edit /etc/shadow - editing those files, you can add users, put them into appropriate groups, add groups, and set the default passwords.
