I have been investigating the IO schedulers lately too.
Google-search for 'Linux IO schedulers' and read the first few pages that turn up. There are numerous examples of IO throughput and simultaneous read-vs-write tests to determine what's the best under different situations. No fancy tools involved, just some basic built-in commands.
