High temperature cpu on ubuntu 11.10 3.0.12 kernel and i5 processor

hello guys

i am a ubuntu user and recently i've noticed the temperature is way too high...right now it is 88 C... and the gpu is 99!
With windows the temperature is almost half of it!

I've tried both installing the patched 3.0.13 kernel, the 3.1.something kernel, and the GRUB fix, still the issue persists...

so i was wondering, should i switch distro? do you think that would help me? Which distro should i choose?

I use the laptop for work and cnanot either revert to windows or have the computer melted down!

thx a lot!

The first think to check is to make sure you have all the important ACPI modules enabled in the kernel. Check the kernel config for:

Code:
CONFIG_ACPI_PROCESSOR=y
CONFIG_ACPI_FAN=y
CONFIG_ACPI_THERMAL=y
I would also check your BIOS options and see if there is anything in there about the fans and thermal management. Sometimes there is an option to let the BIOS manage it, or to let the OS manage it.

Thanks for your answer, the config is fine, i'll check the bios later and post here the results of my research.
This is quite an annoying and potentially dangerous (from an hardware standpoint) issue and i want it to solve it asap, i'm willing to revert to older kernels if necessary
