Help on linux kernel crypto API

I need to use the crypto API in a module I'm writing for research purposes.
What I need is to hash a given key. I have been searching through the Internet to find any resource describing the various functions used in this API but all those descriptions are incomplete. I need more information on the I/O to the functions defined in this API. Can anybody provide help?

What kind of crypto API do you look for? Under Linux Documentation\crypto directory, there are a couple of text file. Are they good enough for you?
