File structures registration in linux modules to the kernel - explanation needed

Hi folks,

I just stared to read OReilly "Linux Device Drivers 3rd Edition" book, at the store the book looked like a well organized but, now I'm in chapter 3 and I find it difficult to understand the meaning of file registration to the kernel and the file types available (under /dev ? or under /proc ?) how could it be that the files we've created (using mknod command from script) are being used by the user-space application to activate system-calls?

for the reader ( first time reader ) chapter 2 seems like very mysterious and not quite understood.

Could anyone please try to explain this issue ?

Thanks in advance,
Neuzen.
