FAT and EXT2FS structure

What are the internal steps involved in accessing the 40th data block of a filesystem? no information about file other than directory entry. both FAT and EXT2FS way.

Moved: This thread is more suitable in <Software---kernel> and has been moved accordingly to help your thread/question get the exposure it deserves.

(I'm guessing that "internal steps" relates to the kernel.)

This sounds a bit like a homework question---could you give a bit more detail on what you are trying to do? Also, have you looked up the specs/format of the 2 filesystems you mention?
