does initrd need the driver in kernel made as a module

HI

I have been getting atkbd.c error with a non-initrd fully compiled drivers in kernel....2.6.20

and yes I have seen this post and have modded all network and iptables stuff.

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=512839

result....the same error and I gather the op still at loss?

I have previously had no probs with 2.6.19 and earlier.

I have read that the change to udev may mean that /dev is not populated soon enough for a fully compiled kernel to work.

So I am thinking ....a shock I know, heh heh, I will eliminate the possibility of it just being an initrd issue.

But I have no experience at making them....and I am testing Mepis 6.5 just to make it messier.

So can I assume....that my root partition which is on a sata....must be made a mod and then compile an initrd.

question 2 any other suggestions?

Mepis is sort of like ubuntu so you can use any of there guides. I would use mkinitramfs.
Look down about half way but I am sure there are many better;

thanks for the link.

umm anyone else know what you must have to have a ramdisk image?
(if you are testing that the sata drive is the issue with udev)

The sata stuff was moved in the 2.6.20 kernel I think
did you do a make oldconfig or make menuconfig or something else
I think you can complile stuff directly into the kernel and still have an initrd
try
cd /usr/src/linux
cat .config | grep CONFIG_SATA*
