Question Do the name and the number for system calls differ for various Distribution ?

Its been only a month since i started using linux, i face lot of difficulties but am learning a lot and am happy.
1) Do the name and the number for the system calls vary for different distribution.?
say chmod is 15 in mine, is it the same in other places too ?
2) Are there different kernels for different distributions.?
2) What is the difference between BSD and any other Linux ?

thank you folks ..

Hello, I know those questions can be better answered from wikipedia than from me, but just a few pointers...
1) the name and number of system calls should not vary among distributions. Furthermore, system calls are serviced by means of the kernel, so they depend on it. And should be more or less the same among different kernels (this is something I don't know very well, and I think this is standardized, maybe in the POSIX standards).
2) the kernel has an official development with version numbers and so on... anyway most distributions apply some patch to obtain some extra feature. And you can easily change the kernel your installed system uses
3) BSD, netbsd, freebsd, openbsd are NOT varieties of Linux! They are Unix anyway, and yes on this you should absolutely read something!

Hope I answered you simply enough! And if there's some imprecision, someone please tell me!

System calls donot generally varies from distribution to distribution...if 2 distribution are using the same kernel version, then the name and number of system calls should not vary..
