Do I need all three (desktop, pae,&default) kernels installed on my system?
Hello, I've been using Linux for nearly a year now.
I have three 2.6.31.12-0.1 kernels installed on my system: kernel-default, kernel-pae, and kernel-desktop. Do I need all three of these or can I delete one or two? I have done some reading on PAE and my system doesn't need it for the ram (only 2048MB installed and max). All three show up in grub as boot options and I think I have tried them all with no noticeable difference. I understand most of what the -pae is for (>4GB RAM, NX, etc) but not the difference between -desktop and -default. Does one have any advantage over the other (I haven't noticed, but maybe in some area I've yet to explore) Thanks for any help. system specs: openSuse 11.2 kernel version 2.6.31.12-0.1 Gateway ML6714 laptop Pentium T2130 Core2 Duo 1.86GHz (although web specs say T2030 for some reason. Used to be correct, but they changed it???) 2048MB RAM |
PAE is also used for virtualizing:vbox, kqemu. Do you use either of these?
Your desktop has little to do with your kernel. |
Yes, I use VirtualBox.
