custom compiled kernel reboots after uncompression, what is missing?

hello,
I just compiled kernel version 2.6.16.18 for a small embedded device.
I am going to create the iso image and copy it on to my pen drive and then runn syslinux on it. just the way I got slax on my pen drive.
the problem is that while linux-live scripts are working fine and creating the iso, my kernel does not boot.
the system detects the pen drive and also finds the kernel image. it un compresses the kernel and even the initrd. but when we generally want to see the ready message the system reboots in the mid way.
what is the problem?
can you tell me a few modules or a few items which I must include in the make menuconfig process? may be I have missed out some thing?
I have the squash fs and union fs modules in my initrd image which I got from the live scripts.
thanking all.
Krishnakant.
