Good morning from Naser,London. This is my first thread in this forum as a new member. Last few days I am trying to configure the vanilla kernel 2.4.20 in my red hat linux 9(kernel 2.4.20-8)box . what the precaution should i need to follow at the primary level . should i need to rename the kernel folder 2.4.20-8 at /usr/src before configuring new vanilla kernel and what else need to do for the first time.I know the next necessary steps like
1. unpack the vanilla kernel at /usr/src
2. make mrproper
3. make menuconfig
4. make clean
5. make dep
6. make bzImage
7. make modules module_install
8. copy to boot directory
9. add line in boot loader like grub or lilo
and so on
Could you help me out any one who is working with clustering .
Um, I hate to say this, but you've got things a touch out of order. If you run make clean after you've run make menuconfig, you'll wipe out the .config file that you just created and the compile will fail. When I've done 2.4 kernels, the order I've used is this:
make clean
make bzImage
make
make install (which you don't need if you're copying by hand)
make modules
make modules_install
I've got a basic kernel compiling guide on my help site (link is in my sig) that you might want to look at.
Now for a question: Is there any reason you're using RedHat 9 (I'm assuming you don't mean Fedora 9)? It is horribly, horribly, horribly out of date and there is a lot of progress that you'll miss out on, not to mention all the security issues that will rear their ugly head. Unless you've got a solid reason, you really should consider a more modern distro.
A multitude of thanks for your valuable reply .I am doing Msc research project on Building linux cluster using openmosix.Openmosix project is closed in Feb 2008 and there is no latest openmosix-kernel tools for Fedora 7 which is using in the university Lab.Due to hardware compatible issue i could not install Rh9 directly ,i have used "parallel workstation for windows" software to install Rh9.Openmosix tools is available for Rh9(kernel version 2.4.20).There is one of the conditions for installing openmosix tools is that i have to install vanilla kernel before installing the openmosix.
