compiling kernel 2.6.38 with my own driver

Hi, I'm trying to get into basic kernel development.

My goal (for now) is to be able to compile a kernel (2.6.38 ideally) with an empty driver
that I created.
I'm trying to be able to compile it first , once I can do this I will try to add some code.

The issue is I found a lot of documentation on how to create a module and add it dynamically
to a kernel but not so much on how to compile a kernel from source with an added driver.

If someone could help me it would be great !

For some additional info I'm working on openSuse 11.4

thanks

Hi and welcome to LQ.

As you likely know, openSUSE release 11.4 is two years beyond end of life.

A great place to look for kernel questions related to development is Linux Kernel Newbies.

Please check their FAQ link. In there is information how to build the kernel.

As part of this, there will be a Makefile, which is the set of rules to build the kernel and modules. As part of the modules build process you will have to add your module so that it will be compiled.

I've moved your question to the Kernel sub-forum to get it better exposure.
