Cannot mount cd drive
 
Linux Suse live eval ver 9.0 refuses to mount the cd drive during installation.
Was going to try for first time since I got the live cd years ago but alas, I have no such bother with Windows.

Your comparing apples to oranges. Without knowing all the hardware details I assume that it is a SATA CD drive which AFAIK is not supported.

Not a SATA dvd drive.

Suse Linux 9 is ancient, I doubt that it will run on any recent hardware. Use a recent distro that supports your hardware.
