Boot information

What is the timing information displayed during the boot process of the kernel? Namely the information enclosed in square brackets?

I've seen this information disappear when some kernel option was removed from my custom kernel and then added back in, in another kernel, what is this option, and what do the numbers mean? Are they measured in seconds, or something else? What are these numbers called? I'm assuming they are for timing purposes?

I think it's the kernel active time in microseconds (since the kernel became active).
It doesn't indicate wall-clock time as the kernel isn't always active - most notable in a virtualised guest, but true even in a stand-alone system.

I'll see if I can find a reference I looked at a while back.
