GNU/linux 2.6, slackware 12.0

Hi:
How can I do to know whether the kernel running in my system has ACPI support? Thanks in advance.

Thanks. Could you tell me how to send you the output of 'dmesg|grep -i acpi'?

Hi, sorry for not replying sooner.
Code:
dmesg | grep -i acpi > file.txt
will put all the output into a text file; manipulating with that might be easier than with raw output. this is the best I could come up with at short notice.

Hi again:
the output of your command lets me know acpid (the ACPI daemon) is up and running). The real thing is that, as I see it, the distro installer must have seen the machine was desktop (as it is in fact) and it decided not to implement standby or suspend except for CRT. But as the machine is running day and night, I regret having my hdd's continuesly spinning. I fixed this by running hdparm from an init script. But I'd like complete machine suspend/standby (I know, little power saving; doesn't matter).

So, i've been reading acpi docs and have seen to do what I want, implies creating or modifying some scripts (acpid man page). These scripts (those left on the hdd by the installer) seem written for only a portable (laptop, notebook, etc, as opposed to desktop computer) to take advantage of acpi. Besides, the doc is written in fairly tech style.

That'd be all. I'll have to wait until my understanding of acpi and script writing improves. And thanks for your reply.

Hi, my commands should have only told you that acpi modules are loaded in the kernel, not that acpid is running (which it should on most distros). If you only want to suspend Hard Drives, then you will have to modify scripts, no going around it, if, however, you're talking about suspending the whole machine (btw not so little powersaving), then I suggest hibernate-script from the tuxonice project (whose kernel patches for suspend I also recommend ). It should be in your distro's repositories.

I'll follow your suggestions. About acpid, I did not explain myself properly. I also ran 'ps -C acpid'. Thanks again, Serafean.

Enrique.
