[NUTTS]** Gentoo after kernel update placing in boot!

Hello prof's I need your consultation.

I need to update kernel in some dedicated server, I have only putty and winSCP root permissions.
Update reason: after iptables insalling IPtables doesn't work..In kernel configuration is disabled "# CONFIG_NETFILTER is not set" as I know it is needed for
Quote:
#
# IP: Netfilter Configuration
#
# CONFIG_NF_DEFRAG_IPV4 is not set
# CONFIG_IP_NF_QUEUE is not set
CONFIG_IP_NF_IPTABLES=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_MATCH_ADDRTYPE=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_MATCH_AH=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_MATCH_ECN=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_MATCH_TTL=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_MATCH_STEALTH=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_FILTER=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_TARGET_REJECT=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_TARGET_LOG=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_TARGET_ULOG=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_MANGLE=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_TARGET_ECN=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_TARGET_TTL=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_RAW=y
CONFIG_IP_NF_SECURITY=y

So Ok... next:

Code:
~ # uname -a
Linux pick.techpoint.lv 2.6.28-hardened-r9 #14 SMP PREEMPT Thu Apr 22 14:03:09 EEST 2010 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
Ok I can see that is 2.6.28-hardened-r9 kernel.

let's go:
/usr/src/linux-2.6.28-hardened-r9

ok let's
Code:
# make menuconfig
Quote:
Check[*] Network packet filtering framework (Netfilter) ---> check[*] Advanced netfilter configuration
-----> IP: Netfilter Configuration --->
and check all this:
Quote:
<*> IP tables support (required for filtering/masq/NAT)
<*> "addrtype" address type match support
<*> "ah" match support
<*> "ecn" match support
<*> "ttl" match support
<*> stealth match support
<*> Packet filtering
<*> REJECT target support
<*> LOG target support
<*> ULOG target support
<*> Packet mangling
<*> ECN target support
<*> TTL target support
<*> raw table support (required for NOTRACK/TRACE)
<*> Security table

Ok exit+safe.

Code:
# make prepare && make && make modules && make modules_install && make install
Ok finish. next stage place it in boot. and here is a problem!
______________
Problem:
In /boot folder I dont have any "other" folders and configs like a
"/boot/grub*" or "/boot/boot"..
just only:
http://img.lejup.lv/images/lejupjiezxtz1351100930.jpg
Code:
boot # ls -l
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1049711 Oct 24 20:46 System.map-2.6.28-hardened-r9
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1049711 Oct 21 20:07 System.map-2.6.28-hardened-r9.old
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root       1 Jan  7  2010 boot -> .
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   30201 Oct 24 20:46 config-2.6.28-hardened-r9
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root   30201 Oct 21 20:07 config-2.6.28-hardened-r9.old
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1634240 Mar 30  2010 kernel
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1820736 Apr 16  2010 kernelnew
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1828288 Oct 24 20:46 vmlinuz-2.6.28-hardened-r9
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1828288 Oct 21 20:07 vmlinuz-2.6.28-hardened-r9.old
so we see old and new kernel binaries but nothing about boot loader configuration.

Ok you can said that I dont have GRUB boot but It's not true as i think, because when i put in console "grub --version"
# grub --version
grub (GNU GRUB 0.97)

So in google answer that I need to change /boot/grub/menu.lst file.. but I dont have this...

ok maybe something others places where it is located just go to:
Quote:
# ls /etc/default
useradd
only useradd.. nothing about boot.

Ok maybe in dmesg logs something I can find:
Code:

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.

.. ok If I dont put it in boot they load old kernel, so I need to do this but I don't know how to correctly do this and why no one config file for grub doesn't exists..

grub is now depricated. You should be using either syslinux or grub2.

I need firstly uninstall grub, then install grub2?
Is it safely if I have only remote access as putty and sftp.

Careful ... if it's running now, don't make any bigger change than you absolutely must, even if someone else says that what's running now is "deprecated." The boot loader's only job is to get the kernel into memory, and syslinux is an even bigger kettle of fish. Not indicated. Your task here .. your only task .. is to prepare and install a new kernel image.

make install should probably accomplish the step of moving the kernel image files into /boot and updating the grub menu-file.

Always keep very careful notes, especially when updating a system's boot loader / kernel from a distance that you'd rather not have to drive.

main problem is: I can't find a grub menu configuration! no one file..

only kernel images and configuration on /boot folder.
