Zoom Modem not recognized by Ubuntu

Have a 56K .v92 dualmode Zoom external faxmodem. It was recognized by both PCs Windows 95,ME and my powermac, but not by windows XP and not by Ubuntu on my Powerspec. It is connected via the parallel port.

I'm not sure about your modem, is it really connected to the parallel port? Maybe so but I have not seen that type of modem before. Normally they are serial.

I think the way Windows handles modems is butt stupid. Modems on Linux are not necessarily OS level "detected" because its an application configuration issue.

I like to use the program ckermit to test my modems.
Code:
$ kermit
C-Kermit> set port /dev/ttyS0
C-Kermit> set speed 9600
C-Kermit> set flow none
C-Kermit> set carrier off
C-Kermit> connect
at
OK
If you get OK then your modem is working.

Ha! (I Stupid) I havn't hooked up one of these to a PC in about 8 years. Your right it should plug into the serial port. Unfortuantely there is no serial port on this new computer. Surprise! So, what are my options. I will need a serial port and a hardware flow cable, or a usb modem, or whatever will resolve this problem. Suggestions?

You can buy a PCI card with 2 serial ports. The OS should recognize the new serial ports when you power up.

This was my first thought. Now I hope I can find a cable for it. My only cable is ADB for mac.

Thanks
