zero write or not?

Is it necessary to zero-write a hard drive between operating system installations? . . or is just overwriting with the new operating system sufficient?

It's only necessary if the drive contains sensitive information.

Old data can in many instances be recovered by specialized tools, but the data will never interfere with the new OS as long as you recreate the file system (that is, format the drive/partition).

Hi there,

no, that's totally unnecessary. You can just re-partition it, re-format the partitions and install a new OS without wiping the disk before. Completely wiping a disk may be a good idea, however, if you hand it over to somebody else, and you want to make sure you don't accidentally pass any personal, private data that could be recovered.
