Z-star Microelectronics webcam

Hi Guys!
okay I'm running Slackware 12.0 and I've just bought a webcam, which when i run lsusb shows the following

Quote:
Bus 1 Device 3: ID 0ac8:3420 Z-Star Microelectronics Corp.
obviously there's a reference to my keyboard and mouse but i removed them.

anyway i downloaded the relevant driver but i'm having trouble locating my /dev/video device!

No matter what i do i cant get my cam to work and it's really getting annoying now. I've been searching all the forums and google for almost 2 weeks now but still no joy.

Also how can i check if i have v4l installed?

Can anyone help?

Please!

You downloaded the drive...did you load it? Usually the device gets created when the driver is loaded...

Yes, there seems to be a problem.

Can you post the output of these commands:
Code:
uname -a
ls /lib/modules
I have a feeling that you may be running a huge kernel. If you are, please switch to a regular generic kernel, making sure to make an initrd.

Hi H_TeXMeX_H!
okay uname -a spews the following output

Quote:
Linux canyon 2.6.21.5-smp #2 SMP Tue Jun 19 14:58:11 CDT 2007 i686 AMD Athlon(TM) XP 2200+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux
and ls /lib/modules

throws me out this

Quote:
2.6.21.5/ 2.6.21.5-smp/ 2.6.27/
as far as the reference to 2.6.27 goes forget it, i cant get that one up and running !

how exactly do i go about swapping to a regular kernel? do i have to recompile again from source?

(you can keep the answer to my last question short as i don't really want to stray too far from the topic)

I need a bit more info. So this kernel you are running is custom as I can see. When you built it from source, how did you build it ? Did you start with a '.config', which one ? When you installed it, did you run 'make modules_install' ?

also post output of:
Code:
ls /var/log/packages | grep kernel
My theory so far is that when you built the kernel you may either not have run 'make modules_install' or you did not have a clean '/lib/modules/2.6.21.5-smp/' directory, in which case the old modules would still be there and if you try to insert one it will fail because it was compiled for a different architecture.

If this theory is right, you'll have to 'removepkg' the kernel modules, maybe delete the '/lib/modules/2.6.21.5-smp/' directory just to make sure, then run 'make modules_install'. If you started with a huge kernel config then it may be more complicated.

Hey H_TeXMeX_H.

okay heres the output from ls as you requested

Quote:
kernel-generic-2.6.21.5-i486-2
kernel-generic-smp-2.6.21.5_smp-i686-2
kernel-headers-2.6.21.5_smp-i386-2
kernel-huge-2.6.21.5-i486-2
kernel-huge-smp-2.6.21.5_smp-i686-2
kernel-modules-2.6.21.5-i486-2
kernel-modules-smp-2.6.21.5_smp-i686-2
kernel-source-2.6.21.5_smp-noarch-2
As for the kernel, I'm not 100% sure believe it or not all i do know for certain was when i got stuck installing it you saved me! thats the first of many many times you've done that! hahaha!

I know i downloaded stuff and removed some links and the created new ones.. to be honest it's that long ago it's kind of slipped my mind! if i remember anything i'll edit this or post the update!

Thanks

Success!
Hi all okay I've spent a while at this but i finally got my webcam to work! As H_TeXMeX_H suggested i swapped to a different kernel and after one or two minor issues relating to kernel panic's i got it up and running!

Thanks a million to all of you for the advice! It couldn't have been timed better, i can talk to and see my relations and family for the Christmas!

Thanks again!

Take Care

Minton MWC 8017 Webcam

Hi, I'm having some similar problems.
I am currently having trouble with a Minton MWC 8017 webcam I have just bought.
I am a Pardus user but it seems similar problems are experienced with other distros, too.
After inserting the USB plug of the camera in, the response to dmesg is as follows:

So, it seems the computer recognises the webcam.
When I type /usr/sbin/lsusb, I get

I now the topic is old, but this may help somebody

I have a Z-Star Microelectronics Corp. USB 1.1 Webcam, that loads gspca_zc3xx when connected. But the image was dark/non visible.

to solve this used http://moinejf.free.fr/gspca-2.15.19.tar.gz

and modified the default setting of V4L2_CID_POWER_LINE_FREQUENCY in zc3xx.c to 2 (1 seems to also work)
I also changed the default brightness to 225

after compiling and installing the webcam works great
