Yet another modem problem
 

Here's my situation for you gurus. I'm building my first computer and need to know if the following are compatible:

SuSE 8.2 Pro
AMD XP 2000+
Archtek's SmartLink 5634PRS Softmodem

Looking at the HSF README file on the Linuxant site, it says 'a Pentium processor with MMX enhancements is required'. Does this imply that all AMD processors won't work?

Let's say it will work with the AMD. I need to know the Device and Vendor ID for the hsfconfig. After visiting a good website, I'm guessing I should use: PCI vendor ID: 127A, PCI device ID: 2013. Am I right?

Should I purchase the updated HSF driver from Linuxant, or toss it in the dumpster and get a hardware modem? Help the Newbie out....throw me a bone. Thanks a bunch.

I have just finished building my computer,AMD XP 2000+,L7S7A2 SIS chipset motherboard,and Suse 8.2 Pro is just fine.
As for modems,external serial modems are the easy way to go.I tried a Dynalink E modem and a old Genius modem and they both worked without any hassles.At the moment I am using a old Lucent pci modem.Sorry I can not comment on your modem,I have no experience of it,but I would think if you looked through previous postings you will find some info.

Do not use a so called softmodem. Softmodem means dumb modem ie it is a passive cheap device that uses your code space and time.

Sometimes called Winmodems they are hard to integrate with a real operating system. Lucent I hear are now charging for the drivers so why do it.

Mandrake 9.2 includes a wizard which includes Winmodem, but everyone I have found come up with "You do not have a winmodem."

I buy externals which work with any flavour of Linux and have just added the kppp package to Mandrake 9.2, as I feel they have missed a trick here. The MCC is far to cumbersome for dial up connections.

I am still waiting for a hardware pci card for £12 which is supposed to work. Otherwise I can recommend both externals and usb's for under £30.

You can get your Lucent drivers for free at ltmodem,just Google to the site.
Both external hardware modems and pci internal modems have to have drivers loaded as modules for them to work,so Linux just treats both of them as just another device.
My Lucent modem connects at 52KB/s,(DCE) which was the same as the ext. Genius.The new ext. Dynalink E modem I used could only connect at 45KB/s and sometimes less.Not much difference for surfing,but for downloading it was useless,so in the end I went back to the dealer I bought it from and got my money back.
I spent a lot of time ( and frustration ) trying to get the pci modem up and running,especially in Suse 8.2 Pro,but now that the exercise is over I feel that I know just a little bit more about Linux,now that must be a positive.

Thanks for your insight guys. It's somewhat frustrating knowing I have a modem which "could" work, and no related posts on this forum for this particular combination. I haven't tried out my Vendor and Device ID guess yet....maybe tonight. I figure I should give it my best try. The thought of having to purchase an external modem just wierds me out; I have plenty of open PCI slots and don't like to add clutter. If all else fails, please suggest any other external modem models you know would work with SuSE 8.2 Pro. I'll check out the Dynalink one. Thanks again!
