YellowDog Sound in a 6500

How do you get the sound to work on a powerMac 6500/300?

The Kernel SHOULD be configured for the sound
(dmasound_pmac) and the boot process says
"Starting Sound Module (Dmasound_Pmac) [OK]"

, and the mixer is set properly, but I only hear silence.
The sound does work if I reboot in Mac OS, so it isn't hardware. It's a software problem.
