Yamagi Quake does not detect Joystick

System: Debian Unstable, updated almost daily.

I have been playing Quake 2 using Yamagi Quake foe quite some time. The joystick worked well. Suddenly Quake no longer detects the joystick!

It's there. Other programs can use it (OOlite, Tuxracer, calibration progs...) but Quake 2 resolutely refuses to detect it.

I installed Xserver-xorg -input-joystick which however only had the effect of enabling the joystick to be used as a mouse - even in Quake.

Help appreciated.

I loaded PRBoom+ - a Doom clone and this somehow enabled the joystick for Quake 2. Cannot explain it but have marked this as solved.
