Xine and MPlayer starts for a long time

I noticed atypical behavior of both Xine and MPlayer in ThinkPad T60 running Slackware 12.1.

1. When I insert DVD video disk into DVD-ROM drive and run Xine or MPlayer the program pauses on the line ``libdvdread: Using libdvdcss version 1.2.10 for DVD access'' for above 90 seconds and eventually starts to display movie.

2. If I quit the movie after first start and run one of these programs for the second, the third, etc. time it starts to play movie in a few seconds.

3. If I just open and close DVD-ROM drive the situation returns to the first case.

These symptoms occur with original drive Hitachi-LG Data Storage, Inc. Model: GSA-4083N. When I change the drive to Panasonic Communications Co., Ltd. Model: UJDA775 both mentioned programs start to display movie in a few seconds.

I'm not sure if it's hardware, libdvdread, or libdvdcss related problem. I have no idea how I can avoid it (except of borrowing the drive from the other machine). Any help will be welcomed.

Today I observed new strange behavior of my machine. When I turn it on with DVD video disk in DVD-ROM drive it tries for about 90 seconds to find bootsector on it although in BIOS boot priority order is set to 1. ATA HDD0 and 2. ATAPI CD0. I'm pretty sure there was no such problem before I tried to switch DVD-ROM drives in my machine.

Moreover now MPlayer starts for the first time for 90 seconds with both DVD-ROM drives mentioned above.

It looks like some atypical hardware problem.

I have the same problem with my ASUS E608 which I have not gotten in the past until I installed Sabayon Linux 3.5.1 last week. It uses patched 2.6.26 and seems it compiled by itself with a new way of wrapping SCSI around IDE. Since the kernel developers have figure that IDE has not been maintain for a long time, they have surrounded SCSI commands that might have affect some IDE hardware. If you re-compile the kernel to set IDE back where it should be set, it should not give you any problems.

Cleaning the lens should also be done. Use camera quality cleaning solution to clean it.

I just tested 2.6.27 kernel. I hope I included all necessary options. The problem with long start of MPlayer and Xine persists. However I observed interesting behavior of my machine with that new kernel:

1. When I power my machine on with DVD video disk in DVD-ROM drive it checks it for a long time seeking for a bootsector.

2. If I run the system with new 2.6.27 kernel and then reboot it my machine starts fast without checking DVD video disk.

3. If I halt the system and then turn my machine on the situation returns to the first case.

It looks like 2.6.27 kernel changes something in my machine in such way that this change persists after reboot. I can't figure out how it's possible.

Earlier I found similar 2.6.27 kernel behavior and I described it here: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...2/#post3328853.

Kernel 2.6.27 affects in some strange way my machine. It ``repairs'' something related to boot procedure and ``spoils'' something related to IrDA. I don't understand it. Every assistance will be appreciated.
